1. CORE

The course comprises: * CORE MODULES - totalling a nominal duration of 400 hours, designed to develop general skills pertinent to the tourism industry, including nature-based and eco-tourism ventures, and industry placement * INFORMATION ELECTIVES - which are pre-requisites for some other electives and which may form part of the 100 hours required to complete the electives component of the course * Different STRANDS - each focussing on a particular facet of the tourism industry and each consisting of two-four modules. These strands provide specific environmental knowledge and operational skills required in tourism ventures operating in High Rainfall Environments, Dry Landscapes, Marine, and Adventure. One strand or modules to the equivalent hours, selected from several strands, must be completed to gain certification * OTHER ELECTIVES - compose an eclectic group providing training in specific tasks required by a variety of tourism operators. The course structure also includes recognition of a number of INDUSTRY-BASED QUALIFICATIONS which allow participants to gain credit for existing qualifications. A participant can gain up to a maximum of 100 hours credit for qualifications listed. The Curriculum Advisory Committee has allocated credit hours according to the value placed on the qualification gained. It is the responsibility of the college offering this course to award recognition for industry-based qualifications against other elective requirements. However, the learner will be totally responsible for the acquisition of these q ualifications which may be gained prior to or concurrently with completion of the course. Requirements to Receive the Qualification To gain the qualification a learner must complete: 1 Core modules 400 hours, and 2 One strand or equivalent cross strand modules 30-90 hours, and 3 100 hours electives* 100 hours Total course hours range between 530-590 hours * These hours may be composed of modules from the ‘Information Electives’, strands other than the one chosen, ‘Other Electives’ and ‘Industry-based Qualifications’. It is preferable that core modules (except work placement) are completed prior to studying information electives, strands and other electives. However, if pre-requisites are considered, modules from core and elective strands may be studied concurrently. It is essential that any pre-requisite is completed before the modules which depend upon them. Learners are to complete elective modules to a minimum of 100 hours. The electives may be chosen from the following groups of electives, from a strand other than the one chosen above, or learners may be given credit for the hours indicated from the list of “Industry-based Qualifications” (see General Notes No. 4).
