State Implementation and Classification
Description
To provide formal training to technician status in the electrical industry and
to develop in the student the ability.
To engage in work that is essentially mental and that may be accompanied by
manual skills applied to the performance of less complex technical functions.
To apply, with guidance, less complex techniques and
practical knowledge to limited specialized technical tasks.
To engage upon highly skilled manual work and exercise associated mental skills
in the operation and manipulation of complex equipment and systems.
To apply difficult standard operational and diagnostic techniques to complex
equipment and systems, or undertake laboratory testing functions.
To become a team leader, and with further experience, assume managerial
responsibilities for groups of technician or trade functions.

recognised engineering or associated trade course are required to complete 15
modules.
Students entering the Advanced Certificate directly
from Year 12 are required to complete 23 modules.
Recognition of Prior Learning principles may be
applied to provide credit for knowledge and skills
already possessed.
2 The NMEC Trade and Engineering Technician/Associate module banks are
not listed as part of this document. Reference should be made to the current
Module Reference Manuals or the complete module descriptors for further
information.
Both student and total hours are notional and are
guidelines for provider management purposes only.
Instructors and students should be encouraged to
take advantage of the acceleration facility afforded
by competency-based training.
3 The course requires the selection of 23 full modules using the
following criteria:
- 0 to 6 full modules from the National Metal and
Engineering Curriculum (NMEC) trade bank that are listed on this document.
- 0 - 23 full EA modules from the Engineering
Technician/Associate bank, the dual status NMEC modules from the graphics,
electrical or electronic module bank.
4 Select between 0 and 23 full modules from:
- the NMEC trade bank (listed)
- the Engineering Technician/Associate bank (graphics,
electrical or electronic)
- the dual status NMEC modules (listed)
4.1 NMEC Trade Bank
A maximum of 6 full modules may be chosen from
this module bank (see General Note 1).
Modules already completed as part of another
course such as a Certificate of Trade Studies
course may not be selected. Refer to the
current NMEC Module Reference Manual for a
complete listing of modules and information on
nominal duration and pre-requisites.
4.2 Engineering Technician/ Associate Bank
A maximum of 23 full modules may be selected
from this module bank (see General Note 1).
