Description
This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to develop specialised acting techniques for performance in single and multi-camera production environments.
It requires the ability to demonstrate a structured approach to playing a role on screen, adapt acting skills to the particular performance and technical requirements of screen, film crew hierarchy, rehearsal and shooting schedules.
Actors are expected to display a high level of motivation and responsibility for themselves and others during screen, television and film shoots.
The unit applies to screen performance actors in the performing arts industry.

Elements and Performance Criteria
Prepare for film and television production
- 1.1 Discuss the process of single and multi-camera production in film and television with relevant personnel
- 1.2 Identify and explain the relationship between the actor and film crew with heads of department including Producers and Directors, in relation to rehearsal and shoot requirements
- 1.3 Identify, research and review film crew hierarchy and associated on-set protocols
- 1.4 Clarify and follow specific work practices and Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) relevant to working on film and television productions
- 1.5 Incorporate film and television industry terminology into role preparations and discussions
Plan and prepare for screen performance
- 2.1 Select, identify and discuss the use of material, the purpose and the key aspects of a film or television shoot with relevant personnel
- 2.2 Evaluate a script through script analysis to enable understanding of the story’s events, characterisations and playable units of action
- 2.3 Research and prepare for screen acting roles, according to the environmental and situational conditions and the screen writer’s intention, ensuring the director’s vision and genre is maintained
- 2.4 Realise and incorporate the intentions of cinematic camera coverage and film editing requirements appropriate to the actor and screen performance
- 2.5 Interpret and create a character for screen performance
Rehearse for screen performance
- 3.1 Critically analyse the meaning of the text, collaborating with the director and fellow actors to acknowledge the story’s function
- 3.2 Interpret the rehearsal process, applying self-analysis and original performance techniques
- 3.3 Practice and present a range of collaborative improvisation techniques during rehearsals
- 3.4 Rehearse scenes and incorporate direction into character interpretation and adapt to a number of performance situations as required
- 3.5 Explore extended film-making practices, including the genre and improvisation to further expand character development
- 3.6 Research and prepare for performance in order to shoot scenes out of chronological sequence
- 3.7 Analyse and evaluate feedback and constructive criticism gained under direction from relevant personnel
- 3.8 Develop strategies for the integration of direction into performance practice
Work under direction on a film shoot
- 4.1 Recognise and consider camera angles, lighting and sound requirements when performing in a technical environment
- 4.2 Adapt performance to the immediacy and demands of location/set, maintaining artistic integrity at a professional level
- 4.3 Respond promptly and creatively to direction, maintaining the integrity of artistic and professional performance in a technical environment
- 4.4 Review and respond to unedited footage and playback during filming, in order to adjust own performance techniques
Evaluate own performance
- 5.1 Analyse performances against previous work and creative goals to assess own technical and artistic development
- 5.2 Review work with relevant personnel and evaluate the creative and technical requirements of the performance
- 5.3 Critically review and adopt new strategies for future screen performances and rehearsal techniques
