Description
To give students a general overview of the plastics
industry to the extent of a working knowledge of
plastic types, engineering properties and
manufacturing techniques sufficient to enable them
to converse with industry specialists.

To equip the students with a fundamental knowledge
of plastic materials and manufacturing techniques as
a foundation to the engineering design units.

Laboratory and project work 30%

Laboratory

Laboratory work should include:

- the production of a plastic from chemical ingredients
- tests to determine physical properties
- tests to identify plastic samples.

These tests should be written up as formal technical
reports in line with the standard report writing
procedures issued by the Study Area.

Project

Project work should include articles made by at least three of the following
techniques:

- Fabrication
- Moulding
- FRP
- Expanded foam.

A pass is required in both the examination and
practical components.
