Description
To provide the learner with the knowledge to identify and understand the nature
of hazards in a laboratory setting. Learners will develop the skills to use
appropriate control measures to minimise the risk associated with these
hazards. Through recognition of the hazardous nature of laboratory operations,
learners are required to develop a personal sense of responsibility for safety.
However, it is important to note that the development of responsible attitudes
to occupational health and safety is not only confined to this module. Safe
work practices are a major emphasis of all practical modules. (The module is
easily customised to take account of the requirements of local employers,
legislation and facilities [eg. animal house, field camp, instrument
workshop]. In these cases, alternative hazards, control techniques and the
measurement of exposure levels should be incorporated).

Range of Variables
This module has the capacity to be delivered either on-the-job or by a variety
of modes off-the-job including full-time mode, block release and distance
learning (off-campus studies).
Where this module is presented as part of a full-time program, the hours should
be sequenced over a semester thus allowing the learner adequate time to develop
the required skills and complete the self-paced assessment criteria.
Where the delivery is compressed as in block release, the learner must have
experience in an appropriate workplace and be able to access relevant reference
material prior to the commencement of the module. Instruction should be
sequenced over a minimum of two weeks thus allowing time for the learner to
develop the required skills and to complete the assessment criteria.
For learners working in an appropriate workplace it may be possible for the
module to be presented as part of a distance learn
