To give students an appreciation of the
applications of mechanical equipment
and to introduce the types of
calculative work that will be required
of them in the later machine design
units - to enable them to relate theory
to practice at an introductory level.

Two assignments

The student must hand in and have
passed both design assignments by the
due date to give a pass in the subject.

Assignment marks not carried forward.

Assignment No 1

The student is to select power
transmission equipment from catalogue
data for a given application. The
selection to be presented in a written
technical report.

The transmission method to be chosen
from those studied in the syllabus and
to be rotated from year to year.

Assignment No 2

To be a descriptive assignment
(approximately 2000 words) outlining
the advantages, disadvantages of
different styles of equipment in one of
the topics, couplings, brakes, clutches
or bearings.
