Description
To develop an understanding of the Social Model of
Health, and its relationship to the medical model.
To give an overview of the common causes of
morbidity and mortality in Australia, and in Western
Australia in particular.
To increase awareness of issues central to health
and well-being, and the role of the welfare worker
in these issues.
To enable students to gain an understanding of the
health system, services available, and how to access
these services.
To critically analyse the health care system from a
sociological perspective.

Participation in Class Discussion 55%
In the first 15 minutes media events will be
discussed. Students will be required to bring in clippings or anecdotes
from the previous week's news which they feel are relevant to the course.
Students will be encouraged to become involved in class discussion week's topic.
Research 35%
Students will be required to research two Health
Care agencies.
Oral Presentation 10%
Students will be required to present in small
groups, information on a specific Health Care Agency
or Service.
The topic must differ from their essay topic.
Assessment will be made by peers, using a given
marking key.
