principles and application of functional design and
its relation to production.

2.1 Originate and develop ideas from a range of
motivation sources.

3 TOOLS, MATERIALS AND PROCESSES

3.1 Critically evaluate the design of art and craft
objects with respect to the appropriate use of
tools, materials and processes.

3.2 Select tools, materials and processes which are
mutually compatible and appropriate.

3.3 Select materials appropriate to a given function or
purpose and make efficient and effective use of
materials in the design process. Select tools and
processes which enhance the use of the materials.

4 SAFETY

4.1 Observe all safety requirements when using materials
and equipment.

4.2 Demonstrate awareness of the importance of safety in
design and the responsibility of the designer for
consumer safety.

4.3 Critically evaluate the design of industrial wares
with respect to their safety.

4.4 Demonstrate the ability to design in an appropriate
manner and with due regard to safety by solving a
set of practical design problems.

5 DESIGN PROCESS

5.1 Critically evaluate and solve functional design
problems.

5.2 Develop methods of presenting design solution as a visual display or in
concrete form.

5.3 Analyse design problems and solutions with respect
to their means of manufacture. Select appropriate
materials, tools and processes for manufacture.

5.4 Resolve conflicts between function, form, human
need, ergonomics, safety, aesthetics, materials,
tools, processes and other design considerations.

5.5 Critically evaluate their own and other students'
work.

5.6 Present work for peer and lecturer appraisal. Evaluate criticism and
defend ideas with sound argument. Modify design as a result of feedback.

5.7 Analyse and critically evaluate hand-crafted and
mass- manufactured works.

6 COMPUTING

6.1 Develop ideas and produce work using a computer
system.

7 ERGONOMICS

7.1 Integrate ergonomics with functional design.

7.2 Conduct simplified work study analysis and relate
this to the solution of design problems.

7.3 Analyse human form and action and relate this to the
solution of design problems.

7.4 Design craft works with due regard to ergonomic
principles.
