This unit covers the skills and knowledge required by a farrier in order to determine foot care and shoeing plans for the horse and to contribute to the maintenance of horse health and well being of the horse. The unit requires the ability to identify the anatomical components of the limb and foot of the horse of specific relevance to farriers, and ability to identify the basic physiology and biomechanical functions of nominated components of the lower leg and foot of the horse. It also includes the ability to work with veterinarians as part of a team, and to provide non-veterinarian horse health care under routine circumstances. The unit also requires the knowledge necessary to apply principles of biosecurity and to advise on disease and ailment prevention applicable to single or groups of horses. The unit includes the requirement to maintain
records of horses to be shoed. A range of horses should be assessed, including a young horse, a mature horse, a shod and an unshod horse.
This unit forms part of the requirements of the trade qualification for farriery.
