Certificate of Trade Studies
Awarded Marks

The Certificate of the Trade Studies
criteria for Stage 3B shall be 90%
theory and 10% assignments plus a
minimum of 50% in the practical skills
area.

The Electrical Workers' Board of the SEC will accept the Certificate of Trade
Studies as the full requirement for open licensing in either the Electrical
Fitting or Electrical Mechanic trades. In order that the Certificate of Trade
Studies fulfils the minimum safety and competency requirements for SEC open
licensing the following criteria will apply.

The 90% theory criterion will be met by
averaging the scaled mark achieved in
all theory tests laid down by the
Superintendent for each completed
subject module listed in Details of
Syllabus and the mark achieved in a
final theory examination.

A pass must be obtained in both:

- the average of the theory module tests, including all mandatory modules;
and

- the final theory examination.

No student will be eligible for a
Certificate mark exceeding 45%, unless
that student has achieved a mark of at
least 50% for the average of the scaled
results of all module theory tests
listed in Details of Syllabus,
including a pass in those
mandatory modules marked with an
asterisk (*), and 50% for the final
theory examination.

The 10% assignment criterion will be
met by the cumulative continuous
assessment of assignments nominated by
the lecturer.

A pass in the practical area will be
met by the student completing and
achieving a minimum of 50% in the
practical assessment requirements for
all modules containing a practical
component, and a minimum of 50% pass in
a final skills test including isolation
and tagging procedures.

Correspondence

The Certificate of Trade Studies for Stage 3B shall be 80% theory and 20%
assignments, plus a minimum of 50% in the practical skills area.

The 80% theory criterion will be met by
an examination paper containing a
section on each examinable module. No
student will be eligible for a
Certificate mark exceeding 45% unless
that student has achieved a mark of at
least 50% for the average of the scaled
results of all module theory tests
listed in Details of Syllabus,
including a pass in those
mandatory modules marked with an
asterisk (*).

The 20% assignment mark is determined,
by dividing the total marks gained for
the best 75% of the total number of
assignments, by 75% of the number of
assignments.

Practical - Continuous assessment, averaged with the result of a final
practical test.

A pass in the practical area will be
met by the student completing and
achieving a minimum of 50% in the
practical assessment requirements for
all modules containing a practical
component, and a minimum of 50% pass in
a final skills test including isolation
and tagging procedures.

Privileged Re-Examination,
Practical Skills Re-Assessment

A privileged re-examination, or
practical skills re-assessment, may be
offered by the Superintendent of the
Study Area. The pass mark for the
privileged re-examination is 50%.

In general, it is recommended that only
one re-test for a given module be
offered within the course attendance
period (where time permits). Any
subsequent re-testing in tutorial
periods will be at the discretion of
the college.
