Description
This unit specifies the essential outcomes for arranging and selecting protection devices and systems for general electrical installations to ensure they are compliant.

This unit is for holders of an Offshore Technical Skills Record (OTSR) or Australian Technical Competencies Statement (ATCS) issued by an RTO and incorporates the minimum context gap to meet Australian standards
and regulations.

This unit shall only be undertaken by holders of an OTSR or ATCS for the following qualification or successor of the following qualification:
- UEE30820 Certificate III in Electrotechnology Electrician.

Entrants must hold a provisional/restricted licence issued by the Australian state or territory regulatory authority responsible for regulating electrical work and the licensing of workers.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1 Prepare to arrange electrical installations circuits, control and protection
  • 1.1 Work Health and Safety (WHS) procedures for a given work area are identified and obtained
  • 1.2 WHS risks are identified and established risk control measures and procedures in preparation for the work are followed
  • 1.3 Safety hazards, which have not previously been identified, are noted and established risk control measures are implemented
  • 1.4 The extent, nature and location of the work is determined from documentation or other appropriate persons to establish the scope of work to be undertaken
  • 1.5 The load requirements for individual current-using equipment are determined from job specifications or from consultation with work supervisor
  • 1.6 Material needed for the electrical installation circuits, control and protection work is obtained in accordance with established procedures and checked against job requirements
  • 1.7 Tools, equipment and testing devices needed for the electrical installations circuits, control and protection work are obtained in accordance with established procedures and checked for correct operation and safety
2. Arrange electrical installations circuits, control and protection
  • 2.1 WHS risk control measures and procedures for carrying out the work are followed
  • 2.2 The need to test or measure live is determined in strict accordance with WHS requirements and when necessary, conducted within established safety procedures
  • 2.3 Circuits/machines/plant is checked as being isolated where necessary in strict accordance WHS requirements and procedures
  • 2.4 Circuits, control and protective devices are arranged to ensure safe and functional operation of the installation and to comply with technical standards and job specifications and requirements
  • 2.5 Earthing is arranged and terminated to comply with the Multiple Earthed Neutral (MEN) system requirements
  • 2.6 Protective devices are selected to meet the required switching and tripping currents, co-ordination and discrimination for overload and short-circuit protection
  • 2.7 Residual current devices are selected to meet the required circuit, switching and tripping currents required
  • 2.8 Switchgear/control gear is selected to meet current, voltage and Ingress Protection (IP) ratings and functional requirements
  • 2.9 Switchboards are arranged to accommodate control and protective devices, links, safety services, and other distributor equipment in accordance with requirements
  • 2.10 Unexpected situations are dealt with safely and with the approval of an authorised person
3. Completion and document and report electrical installation circuits, control and protection arrangements
  • 3.1 WHS work completion risk control measures and procedures are followed
  • 3.2 Work site is cleaned and made safe in accordance with established procedures
  • 3.3 Evidence is obtained from manufacturers/suppliers that electrical equipment selected complies with safety requirements
  • 3.4 Reasons for selections made, including calculations, are documented in accordance with established procedures
  • 3.5 Electrical installation arrangement and specifications for all selected items are documented in accordance with established procedures and forwarded to work supervisor
