Description
To provide the learner with analytical skills and knowledge required by a
marine engineering to skilfully maintain and operate marine diesel engines and
diesel systems.
On successful completion of this module, the learner will be able to use the
above skills and possess sufficient knowledge to operate the main and auxillary
diesel engine systems on board diesel-powered ships in a safe and efficient
manner.

The assessment of this module is holistic in nature and requires assessing on
the integration of skills and knowledge. To be successful in this section of
the module, the learner must show evidence of achievement of the module
purpose. This approach enables the assessment to be carried out by different
means to achieve an holistic outcome.
The assessment scheme is generally designed to ensure that critical knowledge
and skills are assessed more than once and in a variety of ways throughout the
module’s assessment events. This provides a valid assessment of the learner’s
abilities and avoids misrepresentation of failures caused by single cases of
poor performance.
Assessment methods include:
- Essay type questions including short answers requiring sketches
- Simulator/computer exercises
- Participation in laboratory/workshop and submission of a relevant
report
