This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to support the development of children’s physical skills through play.

The unit of competency is applied by educators who provide resources and experiences that develop children’s fine motor skills, gross motor skills and hand-eye coordination through play.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1 Establish an environment for children to develop a wide range of skills range of physical skills through play
  • 1.1 Provide equipment and resources for children to explore and engage with that are appropriate for their age and stage of development
  • 1.2 Provide sufficient space indoors and outdoors for the equipment and resources to be used
  • 1.3 Arrange equipment and resources to prompt children’s interest in using during play
  • 1.4 Provide additional equipment and resources for children to initiate and extend their physical play
2 Facilitate fine motor skill development through play
  • 2.1 Provide resources and experiences that utilise children’s small muscles in their hands during play
  • 2.2 Provide resources and experiences that utilise children’s small muscles in their feet during play
3 Facilitate gross motor skill development through play
  • 3.1 Provide resources and experiences that utilise children’s large upper body muscles during play
  • 3.2 Provide resources and experiences that utilise children’s large lower body muscles during play
4 Promote hand-eye coordination through play
  • 4.1 Provide a play experience that requires the use of hand-eye coordination
  • 4.2 Provide resources indoors and outdoors that promote the development of hand-eye co-ordination
  • 4.3 Ensure light and space is conducive to children being able to use the resources
