Description
To introduce the Architectural
Draftsperson to the problems facing the
Engineer in the design of safe
structures, to enable him to produce a
reasonable solution before submitting
it to the Engineer for final solution.
At the completion of Architectural
Structures 3A, the student will be able
to, for two storey domestic and small
commercial buildings:
- Calculate the design loads on a building and/or its
components to enable the following to be carried out
- Estimate approximate sizes for simple structural members
(beams, columns, struts, and ties) in steel and timber.
- Estimate approximate sizes for one-way slabs, simple
beams, tied columns, strip and isolated footings in reinforced concrete.
- Suggest a safe size for mass retaining walls in masonry or
plain concrete.
- Interpret Structural Engineering Drawings.
