To introduce the final year student to the terminology and concepts associated
with advanced practical application of fundamental surveying skills in an
integrated environment.

Practical examination (6 hours) 50%
-Permanent adjustment of surveying equipment
-Calculation and set out of horizontal and vertical points using theodolite and
EDM (or total station)
-Calculation and precise set out of horizontal points using theodolite and EDM
(or total station) and chain
-Calculation and set out of batters using level and tape or total station
-Production of field notes
Oral examination 10%
-Analysis of results of practical examination
-Interpretation of engineering drawings
-Oral report on folio work
Folio 40%
-Earthwork volume calculations
-Project costing and planning
-Reports on field exercises
-Field notes
Work experience
-Completion of a minimum of two days work experience in the areas of:
- setting out concrete and steel structures; and
- open cut mine surveying
-Three progress reports on a work experience project of about 15-20 hours under
the supervision of qualified industry personnel.
In order to pass the subject, students must obtain a minimum of 60% of the
available marks in each of the graded sections of the assessment plus
satisfactory completion of work experience requirements.
