Description
This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to use the human and physical environment to facilitate the development of children’s language and communication skills.
The unit of competency is applied by educators who structure experiences and environments in such a way as to stimulate children’s use of language. They are intentional and responsive in their interactions with children so as to model and foster communication and language skills.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1 Foster language and communication through interactions
- 1.1 Interact with individual children frequently, in a genuine and culturally respectful manner
- 1.2 Physically position self at child’s level and gain their attention prior to communicating
- 1.3 Use verbal and non-verbal language that is relevant to the child’s culture, background, age and developmental stage
- 1.4 Talk with children about their interests and shared experiences
- 1.5 Use comments and open ended questions to remark on things that the child is doing
- 1.6 Communicate with words that are meaningful to the child
- 1.7 Pause and allow time for the child to respond to questions or comments
- 1.8 Model turn taking during conversations
2 Respond to children’s attempts to communicate
- 2.1 Listen attentively and responsively to children
- 2.2 Identify and respond to children’s non-verbal cues
- 2.3 Use simple language to reflect back children’s words, feelings and needs
- 2.4 Repeat and expand on children’s verbal language to model rather than correct
- 2.5 Modify interactions in response to children’s mood, temperament and communication style
3 Utilise opportunities for communication within the daily schedule
- 3.1 Implement routines for welcoming and farewelling children
- 3.2 Be accessible for children to initiate contact at a level they are comfortable with
- 3.3 Utilise spontaneous opportunities for interaction
- 3.4 Communicate with children during care routines and play
- 3.5 Allocate time to have unrushed one to one conversations with children
4 Provide an environment that supports communication and language
- 4.1 Provide play spaces and experiences that prompt children to explore language
- 4.2 Expose children to stories, songs, rhymes and poetry that reflect their diversity
- 4.3 Display resources that capture children’s interest and provoke comment and conversation
- 4.4 Display examples of written language and symbols in the physical environment that reflect children’s diversity
