This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to effectively audition and seek employment as a screen actor in the entertainment industry.

It requires the ability to prepare to audition for work, communicate effectively, prepare relevant documentation including a curriculum vitae, work effectively with an agent and understand the importance of long-term career management.

The unit applies to screen performance actors in the performing arts industry.

Elements and Performance Criteria
Plan and prepare for auditions
  • 1.1 Use initiative and judgement to manage a professional approach to audition preparation
  • 1.2 Prepare scenes to a professional standard in line with the audition program
  • 1.3 Research, prepare and apply a diverse individual repertoire of audition material
  • 1.4 Select scenes, improvisations and discussions with consideration to the setting, costume and props requirements
  • 1.5 Ensure professional etiquette and behaviours are consistent with industry expectations when undertaking audition preparation
  • 1.6 Communicate confidently with the director or casting director during audition preparation
Prepare for industry employment as an actor
  • 2.1 Research industry relationships with agents and industry organisations and how this applies to the commercial practice in film, television drama, television commercials, and corporate video
  • 2.2 Determine and devise a personal promotional plan identifying the right material to support a professional image and casting profile as a screen actor
  • 2.3 Prepare a curriculum vitae that showcases a visible professional image
  • 2.4 Research and evaluate the Media, Entertainment & Arts Alliance Unions (MEAA) recommended approaches when negotiating contracts with industry agents
Create professional portfolio to support audition
  • 3.1 Present a professional strategy for showreel development and portfolio development
  • 3.2 Collate and develop professional showreels specific to audition, and for inclusion in a professional portfolio
  • 3.3 Publish a professional portfolio to industry standards in consultation with relevant industry professionals
Evaluate audition preparation
  • 4.1 Review all aspects of the audition process and note all areas for improvement
  • 4.2 Review previous auditions and identify and adopt improvement strategies for future auditions
