This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to develop an awareness of, and engage with the local community with children.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1 Establish an environment that promotes belonging
- 1.1 Positively display the diversity of children and families lives within the service
- 1.2 Incorporate aspects of the local community within the service
- 1.3 Provide opportunities for children to play and interact together
2 Support children to develop their role as active members of a community
- 2.1 Provide children with information about their local community and the various roles within it
- 2.2 Consult with children to identify ideas and issues that are important to them and their local community
- 2.3 Plan group discussions for children to investigate ideas and issues, exchange views and share decision making
- 2.4 Provide experiences within the program that are relevant and meaningful to children’s lives
3 Provide an excursion for children to explore and become familiar with the local neighbourhood
- 3.1 Collaborate with children to identify and select an excursion venue in the local neighbourhood that is responsive to their interests, experience and understandings
- 3.2 Document an excursion plan in accordance with legislative and workplace requirements
- 3.3 Gather required permissions to conduct the excursion according to legislative and workplace requirements
- 3.4 Conduct a risk assessment and develop strategies to minimise the risk in accordance with legislative and workplace requirements
- 3.5 Implement the excursion in accordance with legislative and workplace requirements
- 3.6 Assist children to discuss and document their learnings after the excursion
4 Engage with the local community
- 4.1 Establish links with community members that children encounter regularly at the service
- 4.2 Utilise opportunities for children to participate in local community events
- 4.3 Provide opportunities for the community to view and contribute to the service in accordance with workplace procedure
- 4.4 Support networks and relationships that provide benefits for children and families
- 4.5 Promote a positive image of the service to the local community
