Description
This unit describes the knowledge required to solve technical painting and decorating problems related to paint colour and wallpapering.

This is a knowledge-based unit of competency applied by registered painters and decorators to solve technical issues by applying knowledge of colour theory and factors affecting the apparent colour of paint, wallpapering materials and application techniques.

The course containing this unit is a statutory requirement for an application for painters registration in Western Australia (Set 2 pathway).

Elements and Performance Criteria
Apply colour theory to paint mixing.
  • 1.1 Identify primary colours and determine which colours are required to create secondary, tertiary and intermediate colours
  • 1.2 Identify the colour principles related to monochromatic, complementary, split complementary, analogous and triadic colour schemes
  • 1.3 Determine how pastels, shades, tints and tones are created and their effects in relation to colour
  • 1.4 Compare the overall effect of one colour scheme over another
  • 1.5 Recommend colour and scheme to create general physical and psychological effects within an environment
Determine factors that may cause problems by affecting the apparent colour of paint
  • 2.1 Explain the effects of natural and artificial light when matching the colours
  • 2.2 Identify colour considerations regarding durability of colours in exterior locations
  • 2.3 Explain the effect on colours, of age and deterioration of painted areas
  • 2.4 Determine the effect on room colour in changing lighting conditions, or the colour of window treatments and other furnishings
  • 2.5 Determine the significance of the existing coating colour when selecting a new colour choice
  • 2.6 Determine the significance of opacity, sheen level and paint type when choosing colours for paint coatings
Research wallpapering materials
  • 3.1 Identify the different types of wallpaper and their suitability for different locations and surfaces
  • 3.2 Determine adhesive requirements of different types of wallpaper
  • 3.3 Identify common wallpaper characteristics related to their application, maintenance and removal
Determine surface preparation requirements for wallpapering
  • 4.1 Identify the processes for preparation of previously coated surfaces prior to wallpapering
  • 4.2 Identify processes for preparing uncoated surfaces prior to wallpapering, including defects and imperfections
  • 4.3 Identify the process for preparing surfaces where wallpaper has been removed, prior to re-wallpapering
  • 4.4 Determine common wallpapering problems related to surface preparation and ways to address them
Investigate application techniques for wallpapering
  • 5.1 Determine application techniques for walls, including internal and external corners, power points and vents
  • 5.2 Identify application techniques for ceilings, arches and window reveals
  • 5.3 Determine pattern matching techniques for hanging patterned wallpapers
  • 5.4 Identify common problems with wallpaper application and ways to address them
