Description
To provide learners with the skills and knowledge required to operate and
maintain steam turbine machinery and steam auxiliary systems on board a modern
vessel.

On successful completion of this module learner will be able to use the above
knowledge and skills to support the following work place competencies:

- Illustrate improvemnets in the Rankine cycle
- Identify the changes that occur in the operation of a feed system
- Analyse the operation, defects and repair of high pressure watertube
boilers
- Complie a programme for high pressure boiler operation
- Co-ordinate and advise on the operation and maintenance of modern high
pressure turbines
- evaluate turbine gearing performance
Range of Variables
This module is taught in a standard classroom and steam engine laboratory,
augmented with several ship visits. Teaching will be by the Integrated
Theory/Practical teaching method.

The assessment of this module is holistic in nature and requires assessing on
the integration of skills and knowledge. To be successful in this module, the
student must show evidence of achievement of the module purpose. This approach
enables the assessment to be carried out by different means to achieve a
holistic outcome.

The assessment scheme is generally designed to ensure that critical knowledge
and skills are assessed more than once in a variety of ways throughout the
module’s assessment events. This provides a valid assessment of the
student’s abilities and avoids misrepresentation of failures caused by single
cases of poor performance.

Assessment methods include:

- written test with essay type questions, requiring sketches
illustrating Mollier Diagrams

- written report following practical work in the laboratory
