Description
This unit provides the skills required to assess and produce energy rating reports for single and two storey residential dwellings Classes 1 and 10 (BCA), utilising energy rating software.
Range of Variables
This range of variables provides further advice to interpret the scope and context of this unit of competency. It assumes the following:

This unit applies across the Residential Construction Industry.

Scope of work may include but not limited to:
- Single storey private residence
- Two storey private residence
- Detached residence
- Semi-detached residence
- Attached residence

Energy Rating Software - NB these programs are constantly being upgraded and appropriate current programs should be used. Refer to acceptable software approved by the BCA protocol.

Key Competency Levels

NB: These levels do not relate to the Australian Qualifications Framework. They relate to the seven areas of generic competency that underpin effective workplace practices.

Three levels of performance denote level of competency required at perform a task.

1. Perform 2. Administer 3. Design

Performance Level 1 describes the competency needed to undertake activities efficiently and with sufficient self-management to meet the explicit requirements of the activity and to make judgements about the quality of outcome against established criteria.

Performance Level 2 describes the competency needed to manage activities requiring the selection, application and integration of a number of elements and to select from established criteria to judge quality of process and outcome.

Performance Level 3 describes the competency needed to evaluate and reshape processes, to establish and use principles in order to determine appropriate ways of approaching activities, and to establish criteria for judging quality of process and outcome.




Evidence Guide
To achieve unit competency the individual will be required to demonstrate competencies in the preparation of energy ratings for a range of Class 1 residential structural types defined as conventional in scope and/or complexity.

Critical aspects of evidence
Assessment must confirm sufficient knowledge of, and ability in:
- Application of an Energy Rating software program to efficiently create an industry standard Energy Rating Report
- Depth of knowledge and understanding of the principles of energy efficiency appropriate at this level
- Accurate input of data taken off working drawings
- Appropriate knowledge in building and construction techniques, materials and processes

Underpinning knowledge and skills;
Underpinning knowledge of:
- Drafting and drawing protocols and relevant industry standards and codes of practice
- General OS&H principles and responsibilities
- Types and applications of working drawings
- Document control
- An understanding of a variety of applications of principles of energy efficient design and consumption relative to the construction process
- Construction technology
- Building materials
- Regional and climatic influences

Underpinning skills of:
- Ability to read, understand and interpret reference documents including drawings and plans
- Communication including active listening, seeking clarification
- Calculation and measurement
- Attention to detail
- Time management
- Use of computers
- Use of printers

Resource implications
The following resources should be made available:
- A suitable computer laboratory with appropriate levels of illumination and ventilation
- Computer with relevant current hardware and software for Energy Ratings
- Audiovisual teaching aids
- Printer
- Project file for information and review
- Documentation including drawings, specifications and other necessary supporting documents


Method of assessment
Assessment must take account of the Building and Construction Industry’s endorsed assessment guidelines and may use the non-endorsed components
Assessment should not require a higher level of communication competency than specified in the core competencies for this particular AQF level
Procedures and documentation should be those typically used in the workplace
Competency shall be assessed while project work is undertaken autonomously with regular checks and final assessment of finished product
Competency of this unit may also be determined concurrently, based upon integrated project works

Context of assessment
Competency shall be assessed in the workplace or simulated workplace environment and in accordance with work practices and safety procedures.
