To provide the background concepts necessary to describe the physical
properties of classes or substances and the chemical theories necessary to
explain these properties. Learners will develop some practical skills during
this module but subsequent modules will provide more extensive applications of
the knowledge and skills.

Ideally, for full-time learners, the module hours should be sequenced over a
semester period to ensure adequate time for skills acquisition and intermodule
reinforcement.
When delivery is scheduled in blocks, learners will need to access open
learning materials covering all safety and theoretical aspects beforehand in
