Description
This course is an introduction to the ethical role
of the professional welfare worker in relation to
the client and the prevailing social values of
western society. The student will gain insight into
the historical and philosophical views underpinning
society, and the problems and dilemmas facing the
individual as a result of changing values and
standards of behaviour.
The course will:
- trace the development of authority and power systems and
philosophies in western society as counter-balanced by the rights of
individuals,
- provide information to increase understanding, in broad
philosophical, sociological and psychological terms, of "human nature",
- provide major insight into major ethical problems
concerning the professional relationships between clients and welfare workers.

A two hour written examination at the end of the
semester will comprise the remainder of the
assessment 40%
