Description
To provide learners with a basic knowledge of the common groups of
microorganisms and to practise generic microbiological techniques.

Microbiological knowledge and skills will be developed in further microbiology
units.
Range of Variables
This module is delivered off-the-job. Steps should be taken to simulate
conditions and standards of a working microbiology laboratory. This module has
a significant practical component. Delivery strategies must ensure integration
of theory and practical work. Learning activities will be structured to
promote teamwork and will require organisation of the tasks for maximum
effectivity of work time.

Bacterial species used in this module are not to be outside those that occur in
Risk Group 1 and 2 of the Australian Standard 2243.3 and should cover a range
of species similar to those encountered in human, animal, plant, industrial,
food and water microbiology. Registration by the Australian Quarantine
Inspection Service (AQIS) will be required by those using any imported
materials.
