Description
To provide the learner with the analytical skills and knowledge required by a
marine engineer to operate and maintain marine systems, analyse and co-ordinate
surveys and plan hull repair work to the level of Engineer Class 1.
This module will provide a foundation for a student wishing to pursue further
study in ship operation and maintenance.

The assessment of this module is holistic in nature and requires assessing on
the integration of skills and knowledge. To be successful in this Section of
the module, the student must show evidence of achievement of the module
purpose. This approach enables the assessment to be carried out by different
means to achieve an holistic outcome.
The assessment scheme is generally designed to ensure that critical knowledge
and skills are assessed more than once and in a variety of ways throughout the
module’s assessment events. This provides a valid assessment of the learner’s
abilities and avoids misrepresentation of failures caused by single cases of
poor performance.
Assessment methods include:
- Classroom assessment
- Essay type questions
- Exercises requiring a relevant report
- Computer exercises
- Submission of a report
- Interpretation of diagnostic equipment
- Simulator/computer exercises
