To enable students to communicate appropriately in
French, fluently and accurately, both orally and in
writing, for private and public purposes.
To teach students the French grammatical structures
necessary to perform the tasks as required in the
syllabus, building on previous knowledege.

Assessment is to be based on the listed tasks. Oral
examinations should be taped. Students must achieve at
least 50% of EACH of the assessment
components.
40% Aural/Oral Examination (20 min)
40% Written Examination (3 hours)
20% Lecturer's assessment based on the listed tasks as
performed in class.
Criteria for Assessment
Successful communication is the focus of all
assessment. In assessing the communicative skills of the student, the
following criteria (subject to language-specific needs) may assist in
determining the level of student performances:
- Appropriateness of responses
- Pronunciation/intonation/tones
- Language structure (i.e. syntax, word-order)
- Fluency (ease of use, hesitations, repetitions)
- Flexibility/capability to cope with unpredicted elements
in a dialogue)
Internal Assessment
Aural/Oral Examination (To be taped) 40%
Student to act as a consultant for a specific
recreational activity in the target country (chosen by
the student). (15%)
Students to select a controversial issue from a list
presented during preparation time, and nominate whether
they wish to argue the case for or against. (Teacher
argues opposite case.)

Aural comprehension related to the listed
tasks. (10%)
Lecturer's Assessment 20%
Assessment based on listed tasks as performed in
class. (20%)
Examination
Several comprehension passages related to the listed
tasks. (10%)
Write a letter of application in response to a given
advertisement (i.e. job/service/accommodation,
etc.). (10%)
Outline solutions and possible courses of action to
given problems. (10%)
Comment on a given newspaper article dealing with a
topical issue of the FL country. (10%)
General Criterial for Assigning Grades
A = shows mastery of the language areas and
skills specified in the syllabus.
Makes only a few errors.
B = shows some mastery of the language
areas and skills specified in the
syllabus. Errors pose no real interference. C = shows the
ability to communicate within the specified areas. Errors are frequent but do
not affect overall communication. Often requires help. Understands most
questions. F = Frequency of errors hinders effective
communication. Does not understand questions. G = Does not
understand questions, cannot respond.
