Examination 70% Internal
Assessment 30%

Students must pass the examination.

Where a pass is achieved in the examination, the
overall mark is the sum of the two components
weighted as shown above. Otherwise the overall mark
is determined by 100% weighting for the written
paper.

Examination

One two-hour written paper consisting of five questions relating to any of the
following topics:

- Knowledge-based system architecture and application.
- Knowledge representation methods.
- Rule-based systems structure, inferencing mechanisms.
- Rule-based systems control mechanisms, user interface and
performance considerations.
- Knowledge acquisition techniques.
- Methods of dealing with uncertainty (Bayes' and certainly
factor models).
- Propositional logic, predicate logic, clausal logic, fuzzy
logic.
- Expert system design and development.

Internal Assessment

- Development of a simple rule-based expert system using a
shell. This system to involve standard logic inferencing techniques only.
- Development of a simple rule-based system capable of
dealing with incrementally accumulated evidence.
