Description
To enable students to communicate appropriately and
effectively in English and the LOTE (Language Other
Than English), both orally and in writing, in the
areas of Current Events and Media.
To give the students an overview of the media of a
country where the LOTE is spoken and compare them
with those in Australia.
To enable the students to extract salient
information from the media in a country where the
LOTE is spoken.
To enable students to develop a critical awareness
of media reporting and presentation styles.
To inform the students of the current events of a
country where the LOTE is spoken.

2 Listen to a radio/TV interview and write a report of it for a

3 Prepare, and read aloud, a radio news bulletin item on a current event
in a country where the LOTE is spoken for a local LOTE radio

4 Write a short feature article for a local LOTE newspaper on a
controversial media issue in a country where the LOTE is
spoken 10%
5 Compare the reporting/coverage of the same event by two

7 Write an essay (minimum 300 words) on a topic related to media

I Criteria for Assessment
Successful communication is the focus of all
assessment. In assessing the communicative skills of the student, the
following criteria (subject to language-specific needs) may assist in
determining the level of student performance:
- Clarity of expression
- Command of topic-specific vocabulary
- Appropriateness of language
- Fluency
- Structural accuracy
- Knowledge of subject matter
- Accuracy of information.
