Description
To develop an understanding of the fundamentals of
elementary calculus.
To give the student an appreciation of the relevance
of calculus to a variety of situations and
disciplines, by emphasising applications.
To develop an awareness that mathematics is an
organised body of knowledge.
To develop in the students confidence in their
ability to use mathematics effectively.
To develop in the student the ability to communicate
effectively in the language of mathematics.

To pass in this subject students must gain at least
40% in both the internal assessment and examination
component as well as an aggregate mark of at least
50%.
Marks cannot be carried over to subsequent semesters except in the case of a
deferred examination.
Internal Assessment
At least 2 tests 20%
At least 3 assignments 10%
Assignments and tests should be cumulative in
nature.
A test/assignment schedule could take the following form:

Test 1: A one hour test on Topics 1-7 10
marks
Test 2: A one hour test on Topics 1-11 10 marks
Assignment 1: Covering Topics 1-3 3 marks
Assignment 2: Covering Topics 1-7 3 marks
Assignment 3: Covering Topics 1-11 4 marks
Examination
One two hour examination
Examination 70%
