Description
This unit specifies the essential outcomes for fault finding of energy supply network electrical equipment and providing solutions to repair the equipment relevant to the normal way of doing work in Australia.
This unit is for holders of an Offshore Technical Skills Record (OTSR) or Australian Technical Competencies Statement (ATCS) issued by an RTO and incorporated the minimum context gap to meet Australian standards and regulations.
This unit shall only be undertaken by holders of an OTSR or ATCS for the following qualification or successor of the following qualification:
- UEE30820 Certificate III in Electrotechnology Electrician
Entrants must hold a provisional/restricted licence issued by the Australian state or territory regulatory authority responsible for regulating electrical work and the licensing of workers.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Prepare to solve problems in energy supply network equipment
- 1.1 Work Health and Safety (WHS) procedures for the given work area are obtained from work supervisor according to established procedures
- 1.2 Instruction in hazards and risk control measures for specific work functions and work areas are identified and obtained
- 1.3 The nature of work is obtained from documentation or from work supervisor to establish the scope of work to be undertaken
- 1.4 Sources of materials that may be required for the work are established in accordance with established routines and procedures
- 1.5 Tools, equipment and testing devices needed to carry out the work are obtained and checked for correct operation and safety
2. Solve problems in energy supply network equipment
- 2.1 Established WHS risk control measures and procedures for carrying out the work are followed
- 2.2 Circuits/machines/plant is checked as being isolated where necessary in strict accordance with WHS requirements and procedures
- 2.3 Problem solving is approached methodically drawing on knowledge of energy network equipment using measured and calculated values of circuit/apparatus parameters
- 2.4 Circuit/apparatus components are dismantled where necessary and parts stored to protect them against loss or damage
- 2.5 Circuits/components are rechecked and their operational status is confirmed
- 2.6 Materials/replacement parts required to solve problems are sourced and obtained in accordance with established procedures
- 2.7 Effectiveness of the repair is tested in accordance with established procedures
- 2.8 Apparatus is reassembled, finally tested and prepared for return to service
3. Completion and report for problem solving in energy supply network equipment
- 3.1 WHS work completion risk control measures and procedures are followed
- 3.2 Reusable, faulty or worn components are tagged and dispatched for repair to maintain adequate spares
- 3.3 Work completion is documented and work supervisor notified in accordance with established procedures
