Description
To provide the learner with the basic principles and concepts of spectrophotometry as applied to chemical analysis, and with an introduction to the use of spectrophotometers. The knowledge and skills learnt in this module are developed in the later modules Ultraviolet-Visible Spectrophotometry, Infra-red Spectrophotometry and Flame Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry.
Range of Variables
This module is to be delivered off-the-job. Delivery can be effected by a
variety of modes.
For full-time learners, the module hours should ideally be sequenced over a
half-semester period to ensure adequate time for skill acquisition and
intermodule reinforcement. Where delivery is via block release, a nine-week
period is considered to be a minimum. Learners should anticipate up to an
additional two hours per week to cover assignments, reports and general
revision.
As this module has a significant laboratory component, delivery strategies must
ensure integration of knowledge and laboratory skills. In adopting a
particular delivery strategy, it is important to establish the entry
characteristics (particularly employment status) of the learners. For example,
learners already employed in the industry should require less practical
supervision than full-time learners.
