Assessment is to be based on the listed tasks. Oral
examinations should be taped. Students must achieve at
least 50% of EACH of the assessment
components.

40% Aural/Oral Examination (20 min)

40% Written Examination (3 hours)

20% Lecturer's assessment based on the listed tasks as
performed by the student in class.

Criteria for Assessment

Successful communication is the focus of all assessment.
In assessing the communicative skills of the student,
the following criteria (subject to language-specific
needs) may assist in determining the level of student
performances:

- Appropriateness of responses
- Pronunciation/intonation/tones
- Language structure (i.e. syntax, word-order)
- Fluency (ease of use, hesitations, repetitions)
- Flexibility (capability to cope with unpredicted elements
in a dialogue)

Internal Assessment

Aural/Oral Examination (To be taped) 40%

Teacher to elicit information and opinions on prepared
topic, nominated by the student (related to history or
culture of Foreign Language (FL) country). (15%)

Discussion and comparison of media coverage of
particular interest areas. (15%)

Role-play handling a difficult situation, demonstrating
ability.

Role-play telephone conversation with a difficult
customer. (10%)

Lecturer's Assessment 20%

Assessment based on listed tasks as performed in
class. (20%)

Examination 40%

Several comprehension passages related to the listed
tasks. (10%)

Writing of a business letter in response to a given
situation (enquiry/order/complaint/application for
employment). (10%)

Rendition of a short passage from a tourist brochure
from English to FL or vice versa. (10%)

Writing of a short essay on a choice of topics related
to the culture and society of the FL country (length to
be specified according to the language). (10%)

General Criteria for Assigning Grades

A = shows mastery of the language areas and
skills specified in the syllabus.
Makes only a few errors.
B = shows some mastery of the language
areas and skills specified in the
syllabus. Errors pose no real interference. C = shows the
ability to communicate within the specified areas. Errors are frequent but do
not affect overall communication. Often requires help. Understands most
questions. F = Frequency of errors hinders effective
communication. Does not understand questions. G = Does not
understand questions, cannot respond.
