Description
This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to work effectively in technical support roles in the building and construction industry. It includes reviewing the work environment, developing and using effective work practices, contributing to team outcomes, and communicating with work colleagues and customers.
This unit of competency is applied by new entrants to non-trade roles in the building and construction industry who provide technical support under some supervision and guidance.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Review the building and construction work environment
- 1.1 Identify the type of work undertaken and the roles and responsibilities within the work environment
- 1.2 Identify the expectations for support roles that assist work areas with their functions and outcomes
- 1.3 Determine the requirements of the support role to be undertaken and how the work tasks interconnect with others in the team or with the wider organisation
- 1.4 Confirm legal and ethical requirements of the work and any organisation-specific requirements
- 1.5 Identify the links between technical support work and actual building and construction work undertaken by the organisation
Develop and use effective work practices
- 2.1 Prioritise and schedule work tasks in consultation with those allocating the work and with other team members if necessary
- 2.2 Manage time and workload with the use of daily and weekly planners or to-do lists, to establish a routine and allocate time or deadlines to tasks in accordance with organisational requirements
- 2.3 Follow work instructions, and clarify information as required
- 2.4 Monitor own progress and report time or workload issues as soon as they become apparent to obtain advice on actions to resolve them
- 2.5 Set reminders when known work is expected to ensure it can be catered for in work planning
Contribute to team outcomes
- 3.1 Establish rapport and build working relationships with others in the team
- 3.2 Clarify information on team goals, plans and responsibilities
- 3.3 Confirm individual responsibilities and timeframes that affect team outcomes
- 3.4 Listen actively and contribute ideas to problem solving activities and discussions about improving work effectiveness
- 3.5 Assist other team members when required within the limits of own role responsibilities and workload
Engage with work colleagues and customers
- 4.1 Source and study key information on the organisation’s products and services to enable discussions with colleagues and accurate responses to customer enquiries
- 4.2 Use inclusive language and a respectful manner in communication with others in the workplace
- 4.3 Manage personal stress during difficult situations or contacts and seek assistance at the time or to debrief afterwards
- 4.4 Determine when queries and work requests are beyond the current scope of the support role and refer them to others to handle in accordance with organisational requirements
