Description
To provide sufficient knowledge for a learner to operate and maintain auxiliary
boilers, thermal fluid heating plant and their associated systems as an
Engineer Class 2. It will also provide the basis for further study required by
higher qualifications.

Range of Variables
This module is taught in a classroom and laboratory using Integrated
Theory/Practical teaching method. Equipment in the laboratory will be in the
form of static displays or operational models and/or equipment and plant.
Damaged or failed components should be available for display. Ship visits may
be organised if suitable vessels are available.

The assessment of this module is holistic in nature and requires assessing on
the integration of skills and knowledge. To be successful in this module, the
learner must show evidence of achievement of the module aim. This approach
enables the assessment to be carried out by different means to achieve an
holistic outcome.
The assessment scheme is generally designed to ensure that critical knowledge
and skills are assessed more than once and in a variety of ways throughout the
module’s assessment events. This provides a valid assessment of the learner’s
abilities and avoids misrepresentation of failures caused by single cases of
poor performance.
Assessment methods include:
- Written assignments
- Short answer and/or essay type questions in a written test
- Sketches
