Description
To provide competency based training to develop effective communication skills
for conducting formal interviews.

The module covers different types of interviews from problem solving to
information gathering.

The module is suitable for participants who need interview skills to help them:

-gather information from others
-participate effectively in problem solving as the interviewer.

The module assumes the participants have well developed oral communication
skills because the main focus is on the communication skills needed to conduct
interviews and to achieve successful interview outcomes.
Range of Variables
The challenge in delivering this module effectively is to design a
teaching/learning program which will allow:
- time for each participant to practise conducting and participating in
interviews
- time for assessment.

Teachers and trainers may find that participants gain a greater appreciation of
the interview process by acting as interviewees.

Some options for teachers and trainers to consider are:
- organise panels of interviewers to give simultaneous practice
- use tasks/projects in other modules (either communication or industry
specific) for information gathering interviews
- video the practice interviews and use them to discuss different
aspects of interviews and to give feedback. This is useful for those without
interview experience.
- give feedback to participants in a structured interview and ask
participants to give progress reports on their work in a structured interview.
