Description
This module builds on knowledge and skills gained in the Biochemistry I and II
modules. The module focuses on the molecular biology involved in converting
nutrients to energy and structural components. The module also addresses the
laboratory skills required in using biological molecules such as enzymes, as
diagnostic agents.

Range of Variables
This module is delivered off-the-job. For full-time learners, the module hours
should ideally be sequenced over a semester period to ensure adequate time for
skill acquisition and intermodule reinforcement. Where delivery is by block
release, a ten-week period is considered to be a minimum. Learners should
anticipate an additional four hours per week to cover assignments and general
revision.
This module has a significant practical component and delivery strategies must
ensure integration of knowledge and laboratory skills. This is a common module
for both biological and medical stream associate diplomas. Learners should be
reminded that the techniques highlighted in this module are utilised in
industry. This module also underpins the later modules of clinical chemistry
by providing an understanding of:
- enzyme activity and kinetics
- the effects that enzyme activity and kinetics have on whole
