A total of 12 units must be completed, consisting of: 4 Core units (Group A), 8 Fishing specialist units (GroupB) with a minimum of 1 unit from the fishing operations functional area, and all the units from the Marine Engine Driver I group (Group R).

The Marine Engine driver II and Marine Engine Driver III groups of units are a prerequiste requirement for the Marine Engine Driver I Certificate of Competency.
