This unit describes a participant’s skills and knowledge required to conduct roadway maintenance in Coal mining This unit is appropriate for those working in operational roles. Licensing, legislative, regulatory and certification requirements vary between States, Territories, and Industry sectors. Relevant information must be sourced prior to application of the unit.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1 Plan and prepare for conduct roadway maintenance
  • 1.1 Access, interpret and apply roadway maintenance documentation and ensure the work activity is compliant
  • 1.2 Obtain, read, interpret, clarify and confirm work requirements
  • 1.3 Identify and address potential risks, hazards and environmental issues and implement control measures
  • 1.4 Select and wear appropriate personal protective equipment and protective clothing
  • 1.5 Access, interpret and apply mine environmental data required to complete the allocated work
  • 1.6 Obtain and interpret emergency procedures and be prepared for fire/accident/emergency
  • 1.7 Coordinate and transport resources required for the work to the worksite
2 Conduct roadway maintenance
  • 2.1 Communicate and coordinate activities with others throughout the work activity
  • 2.2 Carry out equipment, materials and services checks
  • 2.3 Carry out pre-start, start-up, park-up, shutdown and secure equipment procedures
  • 2.4 Erect/post warning signals and signs prior to commencement of task
  • 2.5 Drive and operate plant/equipment
  • 2.6 Apply ballast to roadways
  • 2.7 Carry out roadway dust suppression
  • 2.8 Divert and drain roof and floor water
  • 2.9 Continually monitor hazards and risks, and ensure safety of self, other personnel, plant and equipment
3 Finalise work procedures
  • 3.1 Complete work plan within the operating capabilities of the equipment
  • 3.2 Isolate services
  • 3.3 Complete written and verbal job/task reports
4 Carry out operator maintenance on equipment
  • 4.1 Prepare machine/equipment for maintenance
