This unit involves the skills and knowledge required to fight and extinguish fires onboard a commercial vessel.The unit is consistent with the related functional standard in Section A VI/1-2 of the STCW 95 Code, AMSA Marine Orders Part 3, Issue 5, Appendix 4, and the Australian USL Code. It forms part of mandatory minimum requirements for familiarization and basic safety competence required for all seafarers.This unit involves the skills and knowledge required to fight and extinguish fires onboard a commercial vessel.The unit is consistent with the related functional standard in Section A VI/1-2 of the STCW 95 Code, AMSA Marine Orders Part 3, Issue 5, Appendix 4, and the Australian USL Code. 1 Operate portable fire-fighting equipment
- 1.1 A, B and C classes of fires are correctly identified in accordance with accepted fire-fighting practice
- 1.2 Correct portable fire-fighting equipment is selected and used to fight specific classes of fires
- 1.3 Class F fires are correctly extinguished with a fire blanket in accordance with accepted fire-fighting practice
- 1.4 Correct techniques are applied for the use of hose lines to extinguish fires on board a vessel
- 1.5 Where applicable, correct techniques are applied for the setting up of foam making equipment to extinguish B Class fires on board a vessel
2 Recharge portable fire extinguishers (where applicable)
- 2.1 Where applicable, correct techniques are used to recharge the various types of portable fire extinguisher
- 2.2 Portable fire-fighting equipment is confirmed as operational following recharging
3 Carry out fire-fighting operations
- 3.1 Correct procedures and techniques are followed when fighting fires in simulated or real fire emergencies
- 3.2 Safety clothing, appliances and equipment are appropriate to the nature of the fire-fighting operations
- 3.3 Extinguishment of a fire is achieved using appropriate procedures, techniques, equipment and fire-fighting agents
- 3.4 Correct portable fire-extinguisher(s) are selected and used for the class of fire involved in a fire emergency
