Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to add range and depth to performance skills in any dance style.The unit applies to those who are dancers and who are constantly refining their technique and expression to produce performances that convey the mood and style of music through dance movements. They may be preparing for performances in commercial or competition settings where they would usually be performing as members of an ensemble, though some solo work could be expected. While supervision and guidance are provided in practice sessions and rehearsals, dancers are expected to display a high level of motivation and responsibility for themselves and others during live performances.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Apply physical conditioning program
  • 1.1 Set physical conditioning goals aimed at improving own dance performance technique
  • 1.2 Identify variety of techniques that can be used for preventing injuries and improving stamina, strength and flexibility in consultation with required personnel, according to physical conditioning goals
  • 1.3 Identify risk factors that may inhibit achievement of goals and seek advice as required
  • 1.4 Wear required clothing and footwear when undertaking exercise regime and practising dance technique
  • 1.5 Perform warm-up and warm-down activities in conjunction with dance and physical activities according to safe dance practices
  • 1.6 Note and discuss with required personnel fatigue and personal limitations when undertaking physical conditioning program as required
2. Practise dance performance techniques
  • 2.1 Practise and refine a variety of complex movements and exercises in preparation for dance performances according to safe dance practices
  • 2.2 Practise techniques for performing with a partner and in an ensemble
  • 2.3 Practise performing basic solo routines according to requirements of selected dance style and sequence
  • 2.4 Incorporate range of dynamics into performance during practice session using techniques
  • 2.5 Practise performing exercises and dance routines using creativity, versatility, individuality and enthusiasm
  • 2.6 Confirm that flow and interaction with other dancers is smooth and within required timing
3. Apply techniques in dance performances
  • 3.1 Confirm intention and requirements of dance routine to be performed
  • 3.2 Undertake performance preparations according to performance context and requirements
  • 3.3 Confirm that personal presentation is in line with performance context and requirements
  • 3.4 Apply performance psychology techniques to preparations as required
  • 3.5 Confirm that dance movements relate to rhythm, melody and mood of the music as required
  • 3.6 Convey choreographic intent of dances through confident and precise execution of dance techniques
4. Review and develop ways to improve dance performance techniques
  • 4.1 Evaluate own dance performance and use of performance techniques, and note areas for improvement
  • 4.2 Identify sources that can be used to build knowledge of terminology related to selected dance style
  • 4.3 Use feedback from others on use of performance techniques and develop ways to improve own dance performance skills
  • 4.4 View performances by industry practitioners and identify new ideas and trends that can be applied to own dance performance practice
