Description
This unit involves the skills and knowledge required to screen articles to enter an airside security zone or landside security zone, in compliance with relevant regulatory requirements of the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) and national operating standards.It includes preparing to screen articles, screening articles prior to entering a security zone, conducting physical search of articles, and responding to the detection of weapons, explosives, prohibited items or liquid, aerosol or gel (LAG) products.This unit addresses aviation technical skill requirements (physical, mental and task-management abilities) related to aviation security duties of ground operations personnel, and contributes to safe and effective performance in complex aviation operational environments.Operations are conducted as part of recreational, commercial and military aircraft activities across a variety of operational contexts within the Australian aviation industry.Work is performed independently or under limited supervision as a single operator or within a team environment.Licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements are applicable to this unit.Use for Defence Aviation is to be in accordance with relevant Defence Orders, Instructions, Publications and Regulations.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1 Prepare to screen articles
  • 1.1 Legislative requirements relevant to screening articles at airports are identified and complied with
  • 1.2 Screening equipment is tested in accordance with manufacturer instructions and workplace procedures
  • 1.3 Situations requiring a physical search of articles to enter a security zone are recognised in accordance with legislation and workplace procedures
  • 1.4 Consent of person to conduct a physical search of identified articles is implied
  • 1.5 Action is taken in response to persons not consenting in accordance with legislative requirements and workplace procedures
2 Screen articles prior to entering a security zone
  • 2.1 Articles are presented appropriately for screening in accordance with legislative requirements and workplace procedures
  • 2.2 Screening equipment is used to identify weapons, explosives, prohibited items and LAG products, in accordance with manufacturer instructions and workplace procedures
  • 2.3 Screening documentation is completed in accordance with workplace procedures
3 Conduct physical search of articles
  • 3.1 Physical searches are carried out in accordance with legislative requirements and workplace procedures
  • 3.2 Physical searches are conducted at designated searching point and, where possible, with the person present
  • 3.3 Components of item are visually identified in accordance with workplace procedures
  • 3.4 Suspected weapons, explosives, prohibited items and LAG products are detected if present
  • 3.5 Work health and safety (WHS)/occupational health and safety (OHS) procedures are followed during physical searches of articles
  • 3.6 Customer service principles and standards are applied throughout screening process
  • 3.7 Person who does not consent to required item physical search is not cleared to enter sterile area and situation is escalated in accordance with workplace procedures
4 Respond to the detection of weapons, explosives, prohibited items or LAG products
  • 4.1 Workplace procedures are followed in response to the detection of suspected weapons, explosives, prohibited substances or LAG products
  • 4.2 Detected weapons, explosives or prohibited items are handled and stored in accordance with workplace procedures
  • 4.3 LAG products are handled and destroyed in accordance with workplace procedures
