Description
This unit describes a participant’s skills and knowledge required to apply trip casing in drilling.This unit is appropriate for those working in operational roles. Licensing, legislative, regulatory and certification requirements that apply to this unit can vary between states, territories, and industry sectors. Relevant information must be sourced prior to application of the unit.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Plan and prepare for operations
  • 1.1 Access, interpret and apply trip casing documentation and ensure the work activity is compliant
  • 1.2 Obtain, read, interpret, clarify and confirm work requirements
  • 1.3 Identify and address potential risks, hazards and environmental issues and implement control measures
  • 1.4 Select the personal protective equipment appropriate for the work activity
  • 1.5 Identify, locate and apply correct personal protective equipment
  • 1.6 Resolve coordination requirements with others at the site prior to commencing, during and on completion of the work activities and ensure briefings/handover details are read/passed on
  • 1.7 Confirm availability and status of necessary permits to work in accordance with operational and legislative requirements
  • 1.8 Confirm availability of necessary third party utilities
2. Prepare to trip casing
  • 2.1 Check grade or grades of casing
  • 2.2 Supervise crew in correctly positioning casing on racks
  • 2.3 Measure and record in writing casing
  • 2.4 Identify joint by the numerical order in which it will be run in the hole and its measured length
  • 2.5 Supervise crew to remove thread protectors, rabbit casing, clean and lubricate threads
  • 2.6 Check casing shoe and hanger joints for damage to threads, sealing surfaces and flapper valves where fitted
  • 2.7 Assemble and check operating conditions of casing running equipment
  • 2.8 Line up pumps to fill casing during running operation
3. Assist in tripping of casing
  • 3.1 Steady casing during stabbing
  • 3.2 Correctly align casing for make-up
  • 3.3 Prepare next length of casing for tripping
  • 3.4 Relieve casing stabber during casing running operations
