Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to operate from elevated work platforms underground in coal and metalliferous mining, including positioning, setting up and stabilising work platforms and carrying out operator maintenance.It applies to those working in operational roles. They generally work under supervision to undertake a prescribed range of functions involving known routines and procedures and take some responsibility for the quality of work outcomes.Licensing, legislative and certification requirements that apply to this unit can vary between states, territories and industry sectors. Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Plan and prepare to operate from an elevated work platform underground
  • 1.1 Obtain, interpret, clarify and confirm shift changeover details
  • 1.2 Access, interpret and apply documentation and procedures required for operating from elevated work platforms underground
  • 1.3 Select and wear personal protective equipment according to site requirements
  • 1.4 Select equipment according to job and site requirements
  • 1.5 Inspect and assess site conditions, determine if scaling is required and respond according to site requirements
  • 1.6 Carry out equipment pre-start checks according to manufacturer specifications and site requirements
  • 1.7 Identify, address and report potential risks and hazards according to site requirements and confirm safe ventilation of work area
  • 1.8 Obtain and interpret emergency procedures and identify steps required to respond to emergencies
2. Position and set up platform
  • 2.1 Communicate work activities with others within scope of own role
  • 2.2 Carry out start-up procedures according to manufacturer specifications and site requirements
  • 2.3 Apply dust suppression and extraction methods according to site requirements

3. Conduct work activities from elevated platform
