Description
This unit specifies the skills and knowledge required to conduct an assessment of a proposed building in a bushfire prone area for the suitability of the external materials to be used in its construction, and to provide recommendations consistent with the Bushfire Attack Level (BAL) rating for the proposed building.The unit applies to individuals who are paraprofessional workers and have technical and theoretical knowledge of bushfire impact on property developments. They demonstrate autonomy, judgement and responsibility in a range of contexts within broad but established parameters. They possess communication and analytical skills to determine and transmit solutions to complex problems.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1 Prepare resources required to gather site data.
  • 1.1 Access and review maps and plans and locate site for assessment.
  • 1.2 Access site and identify building to be assessed from plans.
  • 1.3 Obtain and verify BAL for site and building location.
  • 1.4 Access and review jurisdictional plans for bushfire management for site location.
  • 1.5 Review legislation, codes of practice and standards relative to construction in bushfire prone areas.
2 Assess construction materials for compliance with legislation, regulations and standards for bushfire prone areas.
  • 2.1 Identify building materials for proposed construction from plans and specifications.
  • 2.2 Determine minimum requirement for construction materials according to jurisdictional plans for bushfire management, regulatory requirements and standards for site BAL.
  • 2.3 Assess compliance of specified building materials against site-specific BAL requirements and standards for buildings in bushfire prone areas.
  • 2.4 Identify and record non-compliance of materials to standards, legislation and regulations for bushfire prone areas.
3 Report findings of assessment to client.
  • 3.1 Collate assessments from site visit, plans and specifications.
  • 3.2 Develop recommendations for changes to construction materials.
  • 3.3 Prepare a report outlining assessments and recommendations according to workplace procedures.
  • 3.4 Present report with recommendations to client for feedback.
  • 3.5 Review and respond to feedback from client according to workplace procedures.
  • 3.6 Amend report according to feedback from client.
  • 3.7 Finalise report and distribute to client according to workplace procedures.
  • 3.8 Maintain records and file reports and recommendations according to workplace procedures.
