Description
This unit of competency describes the outcomes required to remove blunt or damaged saw blades, knives and guides and to install reconditioned ones in various types of cutting equipment. Work is completed in a forest products factory setting.The unit applies to Sawdoctor, Saw repairer.No licensing, legislative, regulatory, or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Prepare for replacement
- 1.1 Review work order and where required check with appropriate personnel.
- 1.2 Select appropriate repair, maintenance and personal protective equipment and check for operational effectiveness.
- 1.3 Transport saws, blades and guides for replacement to designated machinery, using mechanical lifting aids as required.
- 1.4 Plan replacement process in line with work order.
2. Replace saws, blades and guides
- 2.1 Follow organisational safety procedures throughout all repair and maintenance repair processes.
- 2.2 Lock-out equipment and remove mechanical and safety components to provide access to saws or blades and guides without damaging components.
- 2.3 Store removed components temporarily in a safe location.
- 2.4 Replace blades and guides in line with manufacturer’s recommendations.
- 2.5 Replace and secure mechanical and safety components in line with manufacturer recommendations.
- 2.6 Check serviced equipment for correct alignment, position and overall free operational performance.
- 2.7 Dispose of used blades and guides in line with environmental protection practices or transfer for reconditioning.
- 2.8 Record and report processing problems and equipment faults to appropriate personnel.
