Description
This unit describes a participant’s skills and knowledge required to transport, position, operate, commission/de-commission a variable message sign, which may be truck and/or trailer mounted, and conduct housekeeping activities relevant to the task in the Civil construction industry.This unit is appropriate for those working in operational roles.Licensing, legislative, regulatory and certification requirements that apply to this unit can vary between states, territories, and Industry sectors. Relevant information must be sourced prior to application of the unit.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Plan and prepare to position, set up and operate a variable message sign
  • 1.1 Access, interpret and apply relevant traffic management plan / variable message sign documentation and ensure the work activity is compliant
  • 1.2 Obtain, read, interpret, clarify and confirm work requirements
  • 1.3 Select and wear personal protective equipment appropriate for the work activity
  • 1.4 Identify, address and report potential risks, hazards and environmental issues and implement control measures
  • 1.5 Identify, confirm, clarify and apply environmental protection requirements
2. Transport variable message sign
  • 2.1 Conduct variable message sign pre-start check and report or rectify any faults
  • 2.2 Prepare variable message sign for transportation
  • 2.3 Ensure variable message sign is secured to vehicle
  • 2.4 Connect, manoeuvre and transport variable message sign
  • 2.5 Enter work site safely, observing relevant road rules, site and traffic management requirements
  • 2.6 Park-up and ensure the braking system is engaged
  • 2.7 Check variable message sign controls and functions and report or rectify any faults
3. Position variable message sign
  • 3.1 Position variable message sign according to traffic management plan/diagram, and meet traffic and site safety regulations and guidelines
  • 3.2 Complete site specific risk assessment
  • 3.3 Select level site and ensure variable message sign is stable
  • 3.4 Ensure variable message sign visibility to road users
  • 3.5 Provide safe travel path for cyclists and pedestrians past variable message sign
  • 3.6 Initiate variable message sign security system
  • 3.7 Operate communication devices
4. Operate variable message sign
  • 4.1 Select, apply and change messages
  • 4.2 Confirm the variable message sign displays the appropriate message
  • 4.3 Ensure the variable message sign is legible to road users
  • 4.4 Confirm message does not conflict with existing signage
5. Shut-down and remove variable message sign from site
  • 5.1 Conduct shut-down procedures
  • 5.2 Prepare variable message sign for transportation
  • 5.2 Remove variable message sign safely from site, observing relevant road rules and traffic management requirements
6. Clean up
  • 6.1 Conduct inspection and fault finding in accordance with manufacturer's specifications and/or organisational requirements
  • 6.2 Carry out minor routine maintenance in accordance with organisational procedures
  • 6.3 Ensure tools and equipment are cleaned, checked, maintained and stored
