Description
This unit of competency involves the skills and knowledge required to deploy aircraft and specialist aviation personnel and equipment to incidents within the state or territory. It includes working in accordance with state and territory operating procedures, processing requests for aviation resources, dispatching aviation resources, processing requests to retain or release aircraft, processing information affecting aviation resource management and reporting aircraft accidents, incidents and occurrences.The unit is applicable to personnel that deploy national firefighting fleet aircraft and/or aircraft and services directly contracted by the state or territory as part of incident management. Authorisation to perform this role is subject to state or territory policies and procedures.The fire sector is those sections of government departments, statutory authorities or agencies that have responsibility under jurisdictional arrangements for the delivery of firefighting and fire management services.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1 Work in accordance with state or territory operating procedures
  • 1.1 State or territory procedures for deploying aviation resources are followed
  • 1.2 Records, including deployment system records, are maintained in accordance with state or territory requirements
2 Process requests for aviation resources
  • 2.1 Availability of aircraft within state or territory is maintained and monitored on deployment system
  • 2.2 Requests for aviation resources are received and processed in accordance with state or territory procedures
  • 2.3 Authorisation for dispatch of an aircraft is obtained, as required
  • 2.4 State or territory aviation operations coordinator is consulted on competing priorities for aviation resources
3 Dispatch aviation resources
  • 3.1 Aircraft and aviation resources are deployed in accordance with their contract requirements
  • 3.2 Flight crew of dispatched aircraft is advised of known aircraft allocated to incident and Fire Common Traffic Advisory Frequency (FCTAF)
  • 3.3 Flight following is arranged as required, for specific aircraft
  • 3.4 Requesting organisation is advised of dispatched aircraft and/or aviation resources in accordance with state or territory procedures
  • 3.5 Dispatch of aviation resources is recorded on deployment system
4 Process requests to retain or release aircraft
  • 4.1 Requests to release aircraft are received and processed in accordance with state or territory procedures
  • 4.2 Requests to retain aircraft are referred to state or territory aviation operations coordinator
5 Process information affecting aviation resource management
  • 5.1 Information on arrangements for managing and supporting aviation resources at incidents is collected and reported in accordance with organisational procedures
  • 5.2 State or territory aviation operations coordinator is notified of concerns with the safety or effectiveness of the management of aviation resources
  • 5.3 Information on airspace restrictions or Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) is processed in accordance with state or territory procedures
6 Report aircraft accidents, incidents and occurrences
  • 6.1 Notifications of accidents, incidents or other occurrences are reported to state or territory aviation coordinator
  • 6.2 Search and rescue procedures are actioned in accordance with organisational procedures
