Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to develop techniques for integrating singing skills with the acting and dancing skills required for musical theatre performers. At this level, practise plans focus on techniques required for building both vocal and physical stamina required for sustaining a musical theatre role. The unit applies to those who are performers aiming to integrate the vocal and movement skills required for musical theatre into their singing repertoire. The process includes supervision during practice sessions with an expectation that individuals also work independently to develop the required techniques. No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Develop warm-up and cool-down techniques
  • 1.1 In consultation with required personnel, analyse aspects of the human voice required for musical theatre performances
  • 1.2 Identify and analyse physical problems that can limit movement and physical expression, or cause injury
  • 1.3 In consultation with required personnel, discuss prevention strategies for physical and vocal problems
  • 1.4 Select and perform vocal and physical warm-up and cool-down procedures for performance activities
2. Develop singing skills for musical theatre
  • 2.1 Identify range and scope of own voice and musical theatre repertoire options according to identified range and scope
  • 2.2 Demonstrate ability to bring characters to life through expressive interpretation of songs from different musical theatre styles
  • 2.3 Identify and demonstrate techniques for conveying emotion and storylines through song, and for moving from spoken to sung voice
  • 2.4 Develop techniques for speaking and singing using different accents
  • 2.5 Identify and develop singing techniques required to perform, in character, scenes that include solos, duets and ensemble pieces
  • 2.6 Demonstrate techniques for integrating singing into dance routines and performing with different microphone placements
  • 2.7 Apply memorisation skills and practise retaining lyrics and lines of dialogue
  • 2.8 Demonstrate ability to perform from simple song lead sheets
3. Review and develop expertise
  • 3.1 Develop personal practice plan for refining singing techniques in musical theatre context
  • 3.2 Identify sources that can be used to build knowledge of musical theatre terminology and trends
  • 3.3 Identify and develop ways to improve own singing skills using feedback from required personnel
  • 3.4 Attend performances by industry practitioners and identify new ideas, techniques and trends that can be applied to own musical theatre practice.
