Description
This unit of competency describes the outcomes required to review, adjust, grind or machine and replace saw guides in band saws and gang saws assuring smooth and straight running. Work is completed in a forest products factory setting.The unit applies to Sawdoctor, Saw Repairer. No licensing, legislative, regulatory, or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Prepare for reconditioning
  • 1.1 Review work order and where required check with appropriate personnel.
  • 1.2 Remove guides from machinery.
  • 1.3 Select appropriate repair, maintenance and personal protective equipment and check for operational effectiveness in line with manufacturer's recommendations.
  • 1.4 Plan reconditioning process in line with work order.
2. Machine guides
  • 2.1 Follow organisational safety procedures thoughout all maintenance and repair processes.
  • 2.2 Review condition of saw guides to assess wear.
  • 2.3 Select attachments for holding guides flat while grinding or machining.
  • 2.4 Set up machining equipment to conduct reconditioning.
  • 2.5 Examine and dress or sharpen tooling in line with safety procedures.
  • 2.6 Remove scored material from guide by grinding or machining.
  • 2.7 Select grinding or machining speeds and feeds to avoid burn marks on guides.
  • 2.8 Recondition guides to meet geometric requirements of sawing equipment.
  • 2.9 Segregate and dispose of unserviceable guides in line with environmental protection practices.
3. Remove, adjust and replace guides
  • 3.1 Remove worn guides from carrier without damaging component.
  • 3.2 Select replacement guides according to manufacturer's instructions.
  • 3.3 Drill fastening holes and clean up surfaces around drill holes.
  • 3.4 Insert new guides in carrier at correct position and required tolerance without damaging component.
  • 3.5 Adjust guides to clearance in line with manufacturer's instructions.
  • 3.6 Check clearance and guide security before starting saw.
  • 3.7 Identify and report low stock and shortages of new guides in line with organisational procedures.
  • 3.8 Identify routine processing and equipment faults and resolve or report to appropriate personnel.
