Description
This unit specifies the competency required to apply domestic surface coatings by hand using a range of application methods.It is designed for use in a pre-employment skills introduction program and is suitable for use in institutional-based vocational programs. Skills development will take place under direct supervision.This unit is not to be used in a traineeship or apprenticeship training program or associated qualifications. It is only to be used in pre-employment programs and carries no credit towards apprenticeship/trade and other qualification types in manufacturing and furnishings.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1 Determine job requirements
- 1.1 Identify job requirements from specifications, drawings, designs, project sheets or work instructions
- 1.2 Identify the workplace, health and safety (WHS) practices and procedures to be used
- 1.3 Calculate the quantities required to complete the job to the furniture industry specifications
2 Plan and prepare for work
- 2.1 Determine the appropriate work practices from procedures and material safety data sheets (MSDS) information
- 2.2 Identify the characteristics of the surface and the required surface finish from specifications or work instructions
- 2.3 Select the appropriate application methods according to the project sheets or work instruction requirements
- 2.4 Identify and check tools, equipment and accessories for the required surface coating task for safe and effective operation
3 Prepare for application of surface coatings
- 3.1 Comply with work, health and safety (WHS) requirements at all times
- 3.2 Use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) in accordance with procedures
- 3.3 Check surfaces for contamination and correct preparation in accordance with specifications and work instructions
- 3.4 Prepare surfaces using appropriate materials in accordance with specifications and work instructions, if required
- 3.5 Identify and repair products with surface or other faults as required
- 3.6 Make trial applications of surface coatings to check equipment operation, materials consistency and specified surface finish
- 3.7 Identify faults and rectify according to procedures
4 Apply surface coatings
- 4.1 Apply coatings according to project sheets, material manufacturer specifications and work instructions
- 4.2 Inspect finished products to meet specifications
- 4.3 Refinish products that do not meet specifications
5 Check work area and maintain equipment
- 5.1 Clean equipment and inspect for serviceable condition and store and report faulty and/or defective equipment in accordance with procedures
- 5.2 Store or dispose of materials according to procedures
- 5.3 Clean and maintain work area
